Spring Bid Season: Spec T-Caps Before the Rush

March and April are the busiest months for masonry restoration bids. Inspections are wrapping up, scopes are being finalized, and estimators are building out specification sections ahead of summer mobilization.

If your project includes Lead T Caps for joint waterproofing, this is the stage where organization matters most. Submittals, profile selection, and documentation should be handled now, not during pre-construction.

At our West Bridgewater facility, all standard T Cap profiles are currently in stock. That helps keep projects moving on schedule. Each order also includes a complete documentation package, so there is no need to follow up on paperwork once the materials are delivered.

What Goes Into a T Cap Submittal and Why It Is Straightforward

On federal, municipal, and landmark projects, Lead T Caps are not treated as a substitution. They are already defined within the specification framework under GSA Technical Procedure 07656 01 and CSI Section 07 65 13.

In practical terms, this means you are not requesting approval for an alternative material. You are supplying what the specification already calls for.

Each Nuclead order includes:

  • Material certification to ASTM B749

  • Certificate of Conformance

  • GSA specification reference documentation

This documentation is included with each of our orders. No additional step is required to request it.

For projects that require higher levels of quality control, production follows AS9100 standards and is ISO 9001:2015 certified. Nuclead is also registered with SAM for federal procurement and holds JCP certification for defense-related work in the United States and Canada.

Submittal delays often occur when a product does not meet the specification and requires additional review. When T Caps are specified correctly from the start, that step is avoided.

Profile Selection: Fit the Joint Correctly

T Caps are available in two primary configurations.

Type A is a flat cap used on horizontal joints such as copings, lintels, and belt courses.

Type B is a 90-degree inside-corner profile used for transitions and returns.

Selecting the correct profile depends on the actual joint dimensions, not the closest nominal size.

Standard profiles currently in stock include:

Profile

Type

1/4″ x 7/32″ (.250″ x .218″)

A only

1/2″ x 7/16″ (.500″ x .440″)

A & B

11/16″ x 1/2″ (.687″ x .500″)

A & B

1″ x 11/16″ (1.00″ x .687″)

A & B

1-1/4″ x 3/4″ (1.25″ x .75″)

A only

1-1/2″ x 13/16″ (1.50″ x .812″)

A & B

2″ x 15/16″ (2.00″ x .937″)

A & B

The 1″ x 11/16″ profile is the most common dimension we see on historic masonry restoration. If you’re working on a pre-war building with standard-width mortar joints, that’s usually the profile to start with. Material is sold on 25-lb spools (40 feet).

If there is any uncertainty around fit, requesting a sample before the bid closes is the most reliable way to confirm.

Why T Caps Instead of Sealant Alone

The main reason to specify T-Caps is their longer service life and lower maintenance needs.

In Northeast climates with freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and thermal movement, sealant-only joints usually need repairs in 5 to 15 years. Lead T-Caps, installed over compatible caulking, have been shown to last 30 to 50 years or more in similar conditions.

The mechanism is straightforward: the lead extrusion shields the sealant from UV degradation, and because lead creeps continuously under thermal and settlement cycles, the cap reseals at the joint face without tearing. There’s no bond line exposed to weather. The sealant underneath stays pliable because it’s not doing the UV work alone.

For building owners comparing bids, the lifecycle cost is easy to understand. For spec writers, CSI Division 04 01 20 (Historic Masonry Restoration) directly supports the specification of T-Caps.

Getting Ahead of the Bid Timeline

Early coordination is one of the simplest ways to avoid delays later in the project.

We provide 12-inch samples for all standard profiles at no cost. These can be used for field testing, mockups, or design approval before the bid is finalized.

If your scope is already defined, this is also the right time to confirm stock availability and begin your submittal process. Standard profiles are in stock, but demand increases during the spring season, and lead times for specialty items may be longer.

Planning ahead keeps procurement simple. Waiting until mobilization can create unnecessary pressure on timelines.
