How do you get your lead sheet specifications right?

Lead sheet is a flat-rolled lead material cut to customer-specified dimensions (often called cut-to-order lead sheet) and used across a wide range of applications such as construction flashing, radiation shielding, acoustic damping, and industrial fabrication. If you’re specifying it for the first time, the most important thing to understand is that a lead sheet isn’t a catalog item with fixed sizes, although we do sell standard rolls. Most of our clients need it customized to their specifications. It’s cut to your dimensions, to the thickness your application requires, and shipped with documentation confirming it meets the material standard you’re spec’ing to. Here’s what you need to know to specify your order correctly and finalize your lead sheet specifications.

Basic information about the Rolled Lead Product

Lead sheet is a custom, cut-to-order product—specify thickness, grade, sheet dimensions, quantity, and documentation needs to match your application. Thickness drives the spec: ASTM B749 Grade B/C for construction gauges; QQ-L-201 Grade D for shielding at 1/8″ and above. Sheets are cut exactly to size (up to 96″ wide), and every order ships with ASTM B749 certifications and a Certificate of Conformance. Use the thickness from your architect’s, manufacturer’s requirements (for research and medical devices) or physicist’s report directly, and note any additional traceability requirements up front.

What lead sheet specifications are important when ordering?

Thickness Is the Starting Point

Lead sheet is available in a continuous range of thicknesses. At Nuclead, we cut from 1/64″ (0.0156″) through 1″ and beyond, and the thickness you need is determined entirely by your application.

There are three practical tiers:

  • 1/64″ (0.0156″) to 3/64″ (0.0469″): Construction and flashing applications — step flashing, counterflashing, roof penetrations, and masonry through-wall conditions. These lighter gauges are flexible enough to work in the field and durable enough to outlast the materials around them.
  • 1/16″ (0.0625″) to 3/32″ (0.0938″): Mid-range applications including through-wall masonry flashing, light-duty shielding, and acoustic damping assemblies where mass-per-unit-area is the design variable.
  • 1/8″ (0.125″) and above: Shielding-grade applications — medical imaging rooms, radiation therapy suites, nuclear and industrial facilities. At these thicknesses, the governing spec shifts to QQ-L-201 Grade D, the military and shielding-grade specification for lead sheet.

For construction work, the applicable grades are ASTM B749 Grade B/C. For shielding, specify Grade D (QQ-L-201). If you’re working from an architect’s or physicist’s shielding report, that document will typically call out the thickness in inches or millimeters submit that number to us when ordering, and we’ll cut to it. We supply ASTM B749 lead sheet in these grades with full certifications.

How we cut-to-order lead sheet

Width matters as much as thickness. Our saw cuts sheet up to 96″ wide, which eliminates seaming on large sheets and allows fabricators to work with full-width material where the design calls for it.

Standard stock runs 48.25″ × 291″ and 96″ × 291″, but those dimensions aren’t constraints — they’re the starting material. We cut to your specified sheet dimensions in-house. If your flashing detail calls for a 14″ × 36″ piece at 1/8″ thick, that’s what ships. If your shielding spec calls for 3/8″-thick sheets at custom dimensions for a medical suite, we cut to those dimensions exactly.

Documentation That Ships With Every Order

For contractors and procurement buyers, documentation is as important as the material itself. Per request, we can include the following documents:

  • ASTM B749 Lead Sheet material certification — confirms the material meets the Lead and Lead-Alloy Strip standard, including alloy composition and grade
  • Certificate of Conformance — confirms the order was produced to your specified dimensions and grade

These aren’t available on request or as an add-on. They ship with every order as a matter of standard practice.

  3. Sheet dimensions — length × width in inches
  4. Quantity — number of pieces or total square footage
  5. Documentation requirements — ASTM B749 cert and CoC are standard; note any additional traceability requirements up front

For flashing work, the applicable CSI section is 07 65 13 (Sheet Lead Flashing).

For shielding, your physicist’s report or facility specification will define the thickness requirement — use that number directly.
