This week Nuclead fabricated and shipped 2″ lead weathercap t-caps, to a restoration project in Pleasantville, NY. Lead T-caps are a specialty of Nuclead and we have most sizes in stock at any time.
T-caps are a soft lead strip, with a “T” cross-section, as the name suggests. They are typically installed in a joint in stone walls, with the leg of the “T” in the joint and the cross bar across the joint. The t-cap is embedded in caulking compound/sealant, forms a cap which assures a permanent elastic seal for any masonry joint. After installation, the surface oxidizes rapidly to a neutral grey which blends with the masonry.
Lead t-caps are used to form a water tight seal in building joints. Particularly in the wet and cold winters of New England and the northern states building movement and settling can result in moisture penetration, this is one of the major causes of joint sealant failure, resulting in leaks and damp within the building.
Typically a joint that is lust caulked in a stone wall will not adequately compensate for movement or settlement of building. By installing a lead t-cap in the joint, the opening to be caulked is reduced significantly and the flexibility of the lead allows for further movement to be accommodated.
The correct size of lead t-cap to be installed is determined by the size of the joint opening, plus any movement likely to be experienced based on the past.
In addition to the t-caps Nuclead also shipped additional items from our extensive lead products inventory, including:
Extrude saw and ship pure lead rods to a machine shop in Cincinnati, OH; for its own value added services.
