Lead Bricks are typically used for radiation protection in the Nuclead Industry

Cambridge, MA February 24th 2017 – Nuclead a leading manufacturer and distributor of custom and standard lead products for research, industry and consumers announces the delivery of several recent orders for lead bricks and lead weights, delivered to customers throughout the United States and Canada.

Lead Bricks for Radioactive Shielding and Radiation Shielding

Lead is relatively inexpensive and among other properties it has a high density which allows it to provide is an important material because of its property to attenuate harmful from gamma and nuclear radiation.

In higher radiation protection applications, such as the nuclear industry Lead Bricks are often the most effective choice. Lead bricks are machined smooth, and can be easily stacked into rooms, walls, coves, glove-boxes, hot cells or partitions and transportation boxes for radioactive materials.

Improved radiation shielding efficiency can be achieved with interlocking lead bricks, which have machined tongue and groove edges that will maximize radiation shield integrity by preventing gaps in coverage. Interlocking lead bricks also allow for easier stacking and structural integrity of the construction.

Nuclead manufactures lead bricks to extremely accurate tolerances, with very low porosity. The smooth surfaces of Lead Bricks allow for easier removal of radioactive dust. If requested Nuclead can manufacture the lead bricks using a lead alloy containing approximately 4% Antimony, instead of using pure lead, the resulting bricks are harder and more resistant to damage.

Often lead bricks will be mounted to steel frames or other structures such as lead lined cabinets and radioactive storage containers for increased structural integrity.

Here are some of the recent shipments of lead bricks

Lead Weights are used in many applications

Lead is an inexpensive, high density easily machined material and thus finds uses in many areas:

  • Lead weights are used in construction, typically for counter weights in cranes, elevator and bridges
  • Lead weights are used for ballast in ships
  • Lead weights are used as sinkers by fishermen and divers
  • Lead weights are used in sports for handicapping

Here are some of the recent shipments of lead weights

  • Fabricate and ship lead weights 60 lbs. each; Pig Lead, Size: 3.00? x 4.00? x 12.00?lg; Profile:54 Preference Code 9290 MCC:316- Source code 66: Per QQ-L-171 Grade B; Encapsulate with high build epoxy, coating was black, 8.0 mils thick & cured; Weather proof packaging. Ship to General Dynamics to be used as ballast at one of their vessel fabrication plants.
  • Fabricate and ship special lead weights to a plastic manufacture. Using the lead weight for miscellaneous counterweight applications during a production process.
  • Fabricate and ship special gram weighted lead weights, packed per customer blueprints. These weights are machined to within +/- 0.5 grams: Sold to a laboratory for research and development project in New Jersey.
  • Fabricate a set of gram lead weights per customer’s specifications. All the weights are used for an experiment for a pharmaceutical company in Cambridge. The lead had to be 99.99% pure or better and weights were held to extremely tight tolerances.
  • Fabricate and ship a variety of lead handicap weights for thoroughbreds. Sold to a trainer in Maryland
