About Lead Alloy

Lead has numerous applications in many markets such as nuclear, medical, military and construction. The properties of lead that make it useful for many of these applications include radiation shielding, high density and corrosion resistance.

Lead is also soft and ductile, properties that make it difficult to use in certain applications, that none the less require the beneficial properties. As a result, many applications will use lead alloy instead of pure lead, where specific required properties are needed.

Often lead is alloyed with other metals such as Antimony, Tin, Arsenic, Bismuth, Copper, and Zinc. Lead Antimony alloys are harder than pure lead and are often used in batteries. Lead Arsenic is used in cable shielding and in the production of lead shot.

Lead Tin / Bismuth alloys have low melting points have low melting points and are useful for applications such as solder.

Several lead based alloys are also known as to as Babbitt metal, lead Babbitt or bearing metal, and are used in the bearing surface on bearings.

Lead Alloy Shipments

  • Fabricate and ship thousands of units of lead alloy, de-coppering Foil. Tolerances of +/- 0.50 grams and thickness of 0.002″ +/- 0.0002″; Ship these extremely tight tolerance products to an ordnance and tactical systems, defense contractor for undisclosed purposes.
  • Fabricate and ship customer blueprint items for an aerospace contractor in Canada. These items were fabricated using 6% antimony lead alloy per AMS-7721. These materials are a regular repeat order for this defense sub-contractor in Ontario, Canad

  • Fabricated and shipped pure lead and Lead /Tin alloy blocks, these were sold to a finish and plating company in Santa Clara, CA. The company is working on a project that involves electroplating pure Lead for an end customer and need to source new higher purity lead anodes. The company needs to fill a 6″x6″x2″ basket. This could be done using a single slug or multiple slugs (for example 3 @ 2″x2’x6″ bars or 12 @ 1″ dia x 6″ rods). The company needs to get the configuration for highest purity at lowest cost so Nuclead can be flexible on form. At this point they are looking for an equivalent of 10 6″x6″x2″ parts. They also acquired this in an alloy with as close to 1.25% Tin. This helps us reduce the production costs in the future. Future orders, the volume on purchases of the ‘custom’ material would be in the tons per order range. Nuclead provide materials for their immediate needs for the pure lead and lead/tin alloy above.
  • Fabricate and ship Babbitt #2: Meets GE Material Spec B21A14C 89%Sn /7.50% Sb /3.50%Cu (Genuine Babbitt, Grade two babbitt): Sold to a Machine shop in New York that specializes in machine building.
