Lead elevator weights are used as a counterbalance against the elevator load, for elevators in skyscrapers, school buildings and other locations.
Cambridge, MA March, 18 2015 – Nuclead a leading manufacturer and distributor of custom and standard lead products for research, industry and consumers announces the delivery of several orders for lead elevator weights to customers in the North East.
Lead Elevator Weights are Counterbalance weights
Lead elevator weights are an example of counterbalance weights, the elevator weight is used to balance the weight of the elevator car plus an additional amount that is typically about half of the rated capacity of the elevator. This means that the elevator motor only has to lift a small portion of the total load, and allows for more acceleration force on ascents and less acceleration force on descents. The elevator weights run on tracks, in the same way as the elevator car, in order to ensure a smooth ride.
There are several other applications for counterbalance weights other than in elevators including:
Cranes – A crane is a mechanism that balances the load to be moved with a lead counterweight, on either side of the pivot point.
Bridges – particularly vertical-lift bridges operate in a similar fashion to elevators in that the weights are used to counter the weight of the deck. This kind of bridge can be made of heavier materials making it suitable for heavy traffic such as railroads
Funfair rides – the counterbalance weight reduces the required power on the motor, by balancing the weight of the load about the pivot.
Forklift trucks – similar to a crane the lead counterweight is used to balance the weight of the load.
Typically the Lead counterweight is designed in such a way that its weight multiplied by the distance from the central support, is equal to the load times its distance from the central support. A famous example of a building that used counterweights to maintain stability is the leaning tower of Pisa.
In some applications the requirements can lead to tight tolerances for the machined lead counterweights. Nuclead has extensive experience providing counterweights, including several repeat orders for custom machined; powder coated lead counterweights for a fortune 500 defense contractor.
Lead Elevator Weights Deliveries
Nuclead’s elevator weights have been used in buildings both old and new, in school buildings and in high rise buildings. Nuclead has continuous lead pouring capability up to 40,000 lbs. standard and up to 100,000 lbs. for special requests, and can manufacture custom lead weights in any size up to those amounts.
Below are some examples elevator weights that have been shipped by Nuclead:
- Nuclead recently fabricated and shipped 23 special sized elevator weights to a repeat Elevator service customer in Massachusetts. This customer uses the custom weights for elevator certifications and maintenance.
- Nuclead shipped an order of Lead elevator weights, for Harvard University facilities, on Cambridge, Massachusetts. The order consisted of several different types of custom elevator weights and was shipped in one release.
- We fabricated custom molds, and poured lead to form special sized elevator lead counterweights for use in four high speed elevators in a skyscraper in Boston, MA, The elevators weights were required by the elevator certification.
- When Nuclead makes custom elevator weight the process starts with the machining custom lead molds specified by your blueprint or CAD/CAM file, then liquid lead or lead alloy is lead poured into the mold and is allowed to set. After this we machine to final specifications and the finish the product either by plating, powder coating or painting. After inspection they are delivered it direct to your dock.
