Cambridge, MA January 25, 2016 – Nuclead a leading manufacturer and distributor of a full range of lead products for radiation shielding, medical, maritime, construction and other applications, announces the recent delivery of several orders for lead bricks to customers throughout the United States

What are Lead Bricks Used for?

The main applications are for radiation shielding and for ballast and counterweight applications. Standard lead bricks are approximately the same size as clay bricks (8”x4”x2”) and weigh about 26 lbs, however they can be made in any size and to custom specifications as required by the customer need. They can also be made as interlocking lead bricks, which is particularly useful in radiation shielding applications.

Lead bricks for radiation shielding – particularly for high radiation levels lead bricks are usually the best choice, with several advantages of lead sheet, the ability to be stacked without the need for additional support structure. Often lead bricks will be used to construction lead walls, boxes or coves for the permanent or temporary storage of radioactive material. Interlocking lead bricks have a tongue and groove construction that allows for maximum shielding and minimal radiation leaching, by removing gaps and increasing structural integrity. The nuclear and medical industries are the main uses for this application.

Lead bricks for ballast and counterweights – depending on the type of ship design, bricks may be the best choice for ballast to counter the turning moment of the wind against the ships sails. they are also used in many counterweight applications such as elevators, cranes, fork lift trucks and in auto racing where they are used to balance the car to achieve optimal.

Nuclead Brand Lead Bricks

Nuclead brand lead bricks are of superior quality & materials and comply with all relevant federal specifications, such as ASTM B29. Nuclead lead bricks are cast from raw pig lead materials which only come from “Conflict free smelters per IPC-1755”.

Molds are created as defined by custom blueprints CAD/CAM files, depending on the application the poured bricks may consists either pure lead or lead alloy. The resulting custom lead bricks are then machined to provide the final finish.

Lead machining requires accurate, repeatable precision. CNC machines are typically used to machine intricate lead designs from standard lead bricks. Custom fabrication may also require the use of saws, mills and lathes to create lead molds or precision lead parts and lead products. Lead bricks can also be finished using powder coating.
